Belfast Summer School of Traditional Music

The team of international tutors is made up of master performers with proven track records as teachers and educationalists. The primary means of teaching and learning is ‘by ear’ with an emphasis in the less experienced classes of assisting pupils to develop oral/aural skills in addition to instrumental competency and developing core repertoire. There is a maximum of 15 students per class.

Classes take place Monday 29th July - Friday 2nd August 2019, 10:00am - 1:00pm at Ulster University Belfast Campus on York Street.

No prior experience is necessary but this class is suitable for players of flute, tin whistle and drummers of all kinds. Instruments will be provided in this class.

Fee includes admission to all programme events with exception of evening concerts and the Trad Trail.

There is a maximum of 12 students per class.

Willie Drennan is a well known multi-instrumentalist, singer, writer and storyteller from County Antrim. He led the Ulster Scots Folk Orchestra from 2000 until 2009 and now regularly tours with his own band and as a solo act. He has presented television and radio shows and facilitated workshops on a wide range of themes.

Willie will demonstrate the fifing and drumming traditions of Ulster and discuss the crossover of traditional fifing tunes with the fiddle music of Ireland, Scotland, England and North America. In particular he will demonstrate the drumming techniques of the mighty Lambeg drum.
