The Belfast Summer School of Traditional Music will partner with the Black Box Academy to present ‘Crossing Traditions’ workshops with fiddle player Paula Kiernan. These workshops are for traditional musicians interested in expanding their repertoire outside of Irish traditional music, to include for example some Scottish, Cape Breton, and Scandinavian folk tunes Paula has collected over the past 20 years. Workshops are suited for intermediate level musicians (must have at least 2 years experience on their instrument), mixed melodic instruments and participants must bring their own instrument. The sessions will also involve some listening to musicians from these traditions and discussions on the similarities and differences to Irish traditional music.

Originally from Armagh Paula has been playing the fiddle for over 20 years. She grew up learning music with the Armagh Pipers Club and studied music at UU Magee under Liz Doherty and guest tutor Tommy Peoples. She has a strong interest in roots music and in particular music from the Scottish, Canadian and Scandinavian folk traditions, having spent time at the Celtic Colours Festival on Cape Breton Island and Tønder Festival Denmark alongside regular visits to Scotland and the Isle of Skye. She has taught at various comhaltas branches, the Armagh Pipers Club and currently teaches privately in Bangor.
